1. History of Chungcheongnam-Do
The Office of Provincial Government was located in Gongju, but later, on October 11, 1932, it was
moved to Daejeon-eup (town), which was promoted to Daejeon-bu and the remaining areas in
Daejeon-gun (county) were reorganized and renamed as Daedeok-gun in 1935.
In 1963 as a result of the reorganization of the administrative structure, the Whangwha-myeon,
Iksan-gun, Jeollabuk-do and a part of Kujagok-myeon, Nonsan-gun were integrated into Yeonmu-eup, and
Daecheon-myeon, Boryeong-gun and Dangjin-myeon, Dangjin-gun were promoted to eup status. In the
same year Cheonan-eup and Whanseong-myeon of Cheonan-gun were united into Cheonan-si and the rest
remained as Cheonan-gun, and Geumsan-gun, Jellabuk-do was annexed into Chungcheongnam-do.
In 1986 Gongju-eup, Gongju-gun; Daecheon-eup, Boryeong-gun; and Onyang-eup, Asan-gun were
promoted to the status of Si, or city, and in 1989 Daejeon-si and Daedeok-gun were integrated and
promoted to Jik Hal Si (Directly Controlled City) by Law No. 4049 (proclaimed on Dec. 3, 1988). The
remaining Namseon-ri, Jinjam-myeon of the abolished Daedeok-gun were incorporated into Duma-myeon,
Nonsan-gun.
By Law No. 4050 (proclaimed on Dec. 31, 1988) Seosan-eup in Seosan-gun was promoted to the
status of Si (city), and Taean-eup, Anmyeon-eup, Gonam-myeon, Nam-myeon, Gunhung-myeon,
Soweon-myeon, Weonbuk-myeon, and Yiweon-myeon were integrated into Taean-gun.
In 1995 an extensive reorganisation of the administrative structure was carried out just before the local
autonomy system was implemented, and urban-rural complex cities were established by integrating
Gongju-gun and Gongju-city to 'Gongju-city', Daecheon-city and Boryeong-gun 'Boryeong-city',
Onyang-city and Asan-gun 'Asan-city', and Seosan-city and Seosan-gun Seosan-city'. On March 1st, 1996,
Nonsan-gun was upgraded to Nonsan-city.
And, by Law No. 6929 on July 18th 2003, Gyeryong branch office was promoted to Gyeryong-si.
Also, the installation of general gu (Dongnam-gu, Seobuk-gu) in Cheonan-si was approved in
December, 2007 and the office was opened in July, 2008. Baebang-myeon, Asan-si and Songak-myeon,
Dangjin-gun were promoted to Eup by meeting the requirements of both population growth and legal
qualifications in May, 2009 and January, 2010 respectively, thereby Chungcheongnam-do is composed of
7 Sis, 9 Guns, 24 Eups, 147 Myeons, and 41 Dongs to date.
Rapid population growth contributed to raise Dangjin-gun (county) to the status of a city,
Dangjin-si(Jan.1, 2012) and the whole area of Yeongi-gun and 21 villages(ri) of Janggi-myeon,
Uidang-myeon, Banpo-myeon were incorporated into Sejong Special Autonomous City as of July 1, 2012.
On Oct. 14, 2013, Baekseok-dong in Cheonan-si was divided into Baekseok-dong and Buldang-dong and
Buseong-dong into Buseong 1-dong and Buseong 2-dong, resulted in 8 cities(si), 7 counties(gun), 24
towns(eup), 137 townships(myeon) and 46 neighborhoods(dong) as of today.
